The Emergency Protection Grants programme, run by Front Line Defenders, provides rapid financial assistance to human rights defenders and organisations facing immediate risk due to their peaceful human rights work. The grants help defenders strengthen their security, access urgent legal or medical support and protect their families when threats escalate.
Who they support #
Support is available to individuals, informal groups, unregistered collectives and registered organisations working across a wide range of human rights themes. Eligible defenders include Indigenous and land rights defenders, environmental activists, LGBTQI+ defenders, migrant and refugee rights advocates, disability rights activists, women human rights defenders, groups working on children’s rights and youth activists.

What support is available #
Emergency Protection Grants (up to €7,500) may cover:
- Emergency medical care and psychosocial treatment
- Legal fees and court costs
- Secure equipment and digital protection
- Secure transportation or evacuation
- Securitising premises
- Relocation
- Wellbeing support
- Rest and respite (provided through a separate programme)
Non-financial support may include:
- Advocacy at national and international levels
- Emergency appeals
- Needs assessments
- Trainings and tailored capacity building
- Campaigns and lobbying efforts
Front Line Defenders also offers awards as part of their broader support ecosystem.
